ok, new to this, and admittedly stumbled on it by fluke when I found a template in an ftp I was browsing. I promptly plunked it into tmpgenc, the KVCD-120-352x240-_NTSCFilm_-PLUS.mcf template, loaded a divx movie, set the stream type to audio and video, no other settings... then promptly kvcd'd or recompressed 7 or 8 movies to like 2/3 the size, all of which worked on my standalone dvd... using nero to VCD ... no complaints from any software.
Much to my surprise... they all fit on one cd. Kewl!
Then of course, I did a straight mpg, currently vcd, and recompressed with tmpgenc with the template, and made my vcd, a previously 466,000 m file went to 228,000. Again cool, til I burned it and played... audio whacked. Out of synch etc etc.
THEN I looked you guys up, found there is actually a site, and a rather lengthy, tho not really complex, I'm fair novice at this, routine to do all this. I didn't find any mention of anyone just burning d/lable divxs straight to vcd using the templates, tho it werx everytime. I'm right now re-encoding the same CSI episode with DR Divx ,and hope it will work after I take the avi and compress with e KVCD-120-352x240-_NTSCFilm_-PLUS.mcf template set to audio AND video betcha it works like the movies I did. hee Hoping, has anyone else tried this? Why did all the other movies come out fine straight to tmpgenc with the template and Video AND audio setting? Or did I miss this procedure? I have the altered template here, if anyone wnants it, and a few divx movies. Is there a even faster way?

ok worked, don't know if this helps save any steps. I just used the existing 29.97 352 240 VCD mg nd compressed with DIVX 5 codec, then recompressed with temphenc and the aforementioned template. Came out perfect, at slightly less than 1/2 the original size.
To anyone that knows what they are doing... is there a faster convertor than Dr Divx?
Honestly I'm trial and error here, so any input would help....

Tho I still not sure about all the additional steps, unless I am missing a big point here in this, I'm on my 15th conversion this am/ and p/m last night, and am still going straight from divx to kvcd vcd compatible with nothing else than tmpgenc and the template. What will I gain with the additional steps and soft? Straight from divx to kvcd vcd compatible seems fine audio and all, with out the additional settings etc...?

When you use AviSynth, and the filters it includes, you'll be able to obtain even more quality at a smaller space.

I think it is the same. I saw that when I pointed you to that page. If you look a little bit around, you can see "until 120 min. of video" or so. 120 means 120 minutes of video.

I have heard of people only using the TMPEGENC template and nothing else like you described. However, whenever I try to do this with a DIVX, the result is video only and no sound. Does anyone know what causes (or doesn't cause) the sound to work? Is it a certain codec that must be installed?

All the templates are set to encode video without audio. The reason is that TMPEG is a very good video encoder, but not a good audio encoder
For encoding audio, please search the "HeadAC3he" forum, and there you will find how to encode the audio.

As for DivX related topics, we no longer discuss anything related to DivX conversions. Only DVD backups or high quality AVI captures done with lossless Codecs, like HuffYUV or similar.

Ok, so I get all of the video from tmpgenc. Then I must get the audio separatly, encode it (with h3adache, etc), and then mux the two together?

TMPGEnc can encode, from long time ago, with toolame (or mpg2enc, I never remember that), same tool that uses Besweet.

No it's not
TMPEG is a very bad audio encoder, unless you use an external encoder, such as HeadAC3he, toolame or SCMPX. Period. Sure, and that's refering to "external" encoders. Not TMPEG's "internal" encoder, which sucks

Exactly, but if your target is DVD, you don't need to mux, because the authoring program will do that for you.
You just drag the video and audio files, and the authoring program is what will do the mux.

To be precise, you can ask to tmpgenc to encode the audio apart from the video by calling an external tool (toolame) and in the end, to mux the result with the video that is encoded in a second operation.
We can't say than tmpgenc can encode audio then... it just knows how to use real (external) audio engines.

I mean, I wanted to say that you are saying now.
I wanted mean that templates could be changed officialy without problem in the present time.
