What is the DVD media real size when it is 4.7 Gb., or better in general. Avertising I saw says 4.7 GB (4.38 GB). What does it mean?

DVD are like Hard drive : they need to be formated to be usable.

4.7 is the raw capacity, 4.38 is the usable one.

Note: on DVD-R it's a little more.
