Be carreful !

These is a "special" firmware page !
The firware here are cracked and modifed fimrware that turn you drive in "no-zone" drive (xhat is called RPC-1 in computer words). That mean that you will be abble to play DVD from all the planet.

BUT... sometimes the firmware modified some features of the player !

For instance, for my pioneer 106D, the firmware is "2x DVD-R / 12x DVD ripp". That means that is turns the ripp speed to 12x (insteed of 4x by default) BUT THE DVD-R WILL BE BURN AT 2x INSTEED OF 4X !!!

So, be carrefull.

noy only the "specials" Phil.
there have the links to the original factory labels and
when the firmware is "special" have lots of advices.

a few days i got an lg4040 that can't be read 4x medias
even using the last 3 firmwares from the factory.
then i download the firmware from this page and works perfect.
now i sold the lg4040 and got the lg4081b!

about pioneer 106d:
strange.....2 friends of mine have the same pioneer 106d
and no one of them have this problems.....i will ask about it!
i read somewhere that the firmware for pioneer 107
when used in 106d model works like a charm (region free)

...and another about dual layer in 106d(seems impossible)
some notes here:

Please, do ! I actually didn't install the firmware because I don't want to turn my 4x burner in az 2x one just to have a RPC-1 player (my other DVD-ROM is already RPC1, so I don't care )

Are you sure about that ? Because with this firmware you can burn at... 8x (on the 107).

No at all ! Pioneer did a demo at the CeBit : 106 can actually burn 2-layer DVD. And a lot of other current DVD burner can !
But trust me : producer will NEVER release the firmwares for that. They have too much to earn by solding new burners !

I grabbed the 1.33 firmware for my Pioneer A05 to get 12x ripping; the official firmware only lets you copy Video DVDs at 2x or less, which is annoying when making backups, and nearly useless when you want to make a copy of a DVD you made yourself...

It gives RPC-1 which I may never use since I don't expect to get any discs that aren't region 1 in the near future; it also allows burning of some old 1x DVD-Rs at 2x which I'll also never need since I have no 1x discs (I've just switched to real 4x media).

Come to think of it, Dialhot, that could be what the "2x" in the firmware for your 106 indicates (burn 1x discs at 2x), you can probably still burn 4x discs at the top speed. It's worth a try if you're able to get the official firmware from Pioneer (so you can revert just in case)...

Nope ! The upgrade software allows you to install a firmware only if it's a release greater than the one that is already in the driver. So if I burn a rpc-1 1.07 (the last realease for 106D) I can't return back to offical 1.07

That is why I wanted to be sure. As I told, I already have an other DVD-Rom that is RPC-1 and can ripp at 8x so it is not a matter of death for me

Ah, I didn't realize that... good thing the firmware upgrade worked fine on the first try on my A05...

I wonder if DVRFlash (listed on the Pioneer firmware page) is able to downgrade the firmware... we'll have to wait to hear back from Jorel, I guess...

Jorel, you missed something : the RPC1 firmware are often original ones that are CRACKED to become RPC-1.
I know that 1.07 is the original from pioneer, but the REAL original one (the one that is currently in my DVD) is RPC-2 ! not RPC-1. And with this I burn DVD at 4x, not 2x as it is mentioned on the RPC-1 1.07 firmware !

That's why I don't want to put the RPC-1 if it is true that the DVD-R burn speed will be x2 with it.

If someone can answer to this, I will be glad to read it. Else I will continue to live with the official firmware.

Phil,
i'm curious:

if i right understand,
using firmware 1.06:
"4X DVD-R Writability Improvement
2X DVD-RW Writability Improvement
Defect management(DRT-DM) Improvement
+RW Readability Improvement"

using firmware 1.07
"DVD-RW Writability Improvement
2X DVD-R Writability Improvement
DVD Playability Improvement"

means that using 1.07 you will got
"2X DVD-R Writability Improvement"
it's only "improvement for 2x...
---> NOT means that the drive will stop to burn in 4x
like posted here:
http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-...v00002r_e.html

and more:
the first friend send me now a mail with the following informations:

after search in pionner homepage for new firmware,
i download the 1.07.
then i see that was the same that came with the drive !
i don't up update:

"PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D (Rev. 1.07)"
Region code: 4
Region Control: RPC-2
my 2 friends got this model in the same day!
was me that did a call searching where had the drives for they buy!

the firmwares are originals that came with the drives
---> without any update and burn ok at 4x

he give me a copy of "final fantasy" that was burned at 4x!!!!
it's true my friend,not kidding!

i have 2 screenshots that he send to me from dvdinfo
showing the firmware revision like posted,
if you want,i send it to you!

correct me if i understand something wrong, ok?

You are talking about the official 1.07 RPC-2 firwmare (that I already have in my drive It seems that you still don't understand that) and NOT the 1.07 RPC-1 that is the one that gives me doubts !

THAT is what is indicated for RPC-1 (that is a cracked firmware, I repeat) on http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

"Pioneer DVR-106 v1.07 RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip"

Don't you undersand this as "with this firmware you will ripp at 12x and burn DVD-R at 2x" ? I do understand that like this. And you?
