Hello all,

Unfortunately the time has come for me to sell this workflow. This was a budget workflow that I purchased directly from lordsmurf in 2022. Ultimately it received little use. /: Also included are all necessary cables provided by lordsmurf and a remote for the VCR that I bought separately. If/when I find a buyer I will give everything one last smoke test before shipping.

Workflow items:
- JVC SR-VS30U (B+ rated by lordsmurf)
- AVT-8120 quad splitter
- Pinnacle capture card (which I believe has the preferred chipset)

Asking $1750 plus shipping (tracking, signature, etc) from Massachusetts, USA. Willing to ship anywhere. Prefer Zelle or Paypal. Thank you!

Hi, someone might be able to answer more confidently but I believe the answer is no. This is NTSC equipment. I’ll edit the post to include that.

What is the purpose of the AVT box? LS has another post saying that the TBC in it doesn't do anything here:

- You didn't read the 2019 update/FYI in that marketplace listing/post.
- And then I just added a 2025 update for added details.

In this budget workflow, it acts as composite frame TBC. And it does quite decent for that function, arguably even better than some non-ideal s-video TBCs.

I have a few questions regarding this workflow.
  • Do the MiniDV player and IEEE 1394 output on the JVC SR-VS30U work (has it been tested).
  • Did you purchase the capture card from LS on the his main tread (https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/mar...ati-600-a.html). I just want to confirm it has the desired chip-set.
  • Is the capture card an external USB device?
  • I also have several HI8 tapes to capture. Do you know if any known issues that may result from using this TBC with Hi8 camcorder.
  • Were you able to figure out the vertical lines that you observed from the TBC? (https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...-vertical.html)

I'm answering as much as I'm able to answer here.

- I believe I never touched the MiniDV player - actually, LS had taped over it, not actually sure why TBH, maybe LS can answer. Is the IEEE 1394 output another one separate from the composite / svideo? That's the only use case I tried.
- I attached pics of the capture card to this reply. It's USB and I believe has the desired chipset.
- I can't comment on Hi8 at all.
- Never sorted out the vertical lines. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but also, that was also Super8 footage that was converted to VHS ages ago - maybe I was doing something nonstandard, or had something configured wrong. IIRC, the lines didn't show up for some other tapes I had, I will test this again.

Sorry, I'm trying to respond on the quicker side, but I haven't touched this equipment in ~1.5 years so a bunch of the info has left my head. My life got busier after I invested in the equipment, and it's really just been sitting on a shelf.

I'm happy to send more pics of the stuff and wire up the workflow again with VirtualDub to make sure the data is coming through fine.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I understand that the MiniDV player and the IEEE 1394 output has not been tested. Perhaps LS can comment on why the MiniDV player was taped over. However, as it has been a few years since you purchased the VCR and it was not sold with the intention of using the MiniDV player, this may be unlikely

Thank you for including a picture of the capture card, I see it is USB and external. Also, though not particularly relevant, it is quite pretty

Thank you, I look forward to the results of your test regarding the TBC. I am a bit concerned because I believe you mentioned in the previous linked post that you also saw the lines on the blue VCR screen (when no tape was playing). I am very new to TBCs and am still learning, so I very well may be missing something.

I completely understand life getting busy and do appreciate your quick reply!

JVC deck MiniDV has engineering flaws. Most of those are more likely to eat a tape than play a tape. Sure, it can always be "fixed" for a time, but it just re-fails in time. So your DV tapes are at risk. And there's zero reason for this situation. A quality MiniDV camera will always be better than the playback quality of JVC MiniDV.

If you have a few DVCAM tapes, and want a cheap DVCAM player, the VS30 DV player works with those. But the same risk exists. For MiniDV, there is no good reason to use it. For DVCAM, for a few tapes, I can understand -- though still a bad idea if the tapes matter.

The VS30 can be an excellent VHS player. But that's it. That's the reason to own/buy it, nothing more.

The TBC lines issues is/was probably related to local electrical interference. That's a standard power/wiring issue that can affect anything electrical/electronics (video, audio, etc). Sometimes even things like microwaves, phones, etc.
