VHS cassette retail packaging practices?

Morning all,
I'm based in South Africa and have come across a sealed VHS cassette (still with price tag). I have noticed that the actual cassette is wrapped in plastic as well (looking through the clear outer plastic wrapping from the side).
My question is - is, or was, this standard practice worldwide or uniquely a South African thing?
Would appreciate any feedback on this.

All media comes wrapped from factory with clear plastic, It's a worldwide manufacturing and packaging standard.

Many thanks. Breakdown would be centralised manufacturer on cassettes, then sent to distributor where the covers are printed, cassettes boxed and sealed.
Have I got that correct?

I don't know the specifics, I didn't work in a warehouse, Any particular reason for this quest?

I like the story behind the story. The tape I have is Harry Potter 1 done by Nu Metro Home Ent which is no longer, if I look at the price tag it's insane that we were willing to pay that much 20 odd years ago

Original prerecorded VHS cassettes was commonly wrapped separately before putting in a case. At least in Europe.
Because they was recorded and packed in cases by different companies. As I remember they was always double wrapped - cassette and case.

That's not a common practice in the U.S. (actually, I've never seen it done), but is certainly normal in Europe and the U.K. I have NOS British and German VHS cassettes, and the tapes themselves are wrapped in folded cellophane inside of the clear polypropylene clamshells, which were further sealed in shrink wrap.

That matches what I’ve seen as well. The double-wrapping usually points to separate production steps, tapes duplicated and wrapped at one facility, then cases printed, assembled, and shrink-wrapped later by a distributor or regional partner. It also explains why this shows up more often in Europe, the UK, and some international markets than in the U.S. Really interesting piece of media history, especially with defunct distributors like Nu Metro.
