only the super high end Sony Betas have S-video
transfers are the only reason to even use a VCR...

yes they are newer and they also play Digital8 tapes
just make sure you get one that has 8mm/Hi8 playback - some are digital8 only.

the DD really only helps with EP mode tapes (and an AG-1980 is better with those anyway)
the biggest issue with the DD is over time...
