I'm of this thinking as well. The majority of issues I've had with tracking are the player jumping around trying to figure out what it's playing. I've a Hitachi top loader from the 80s that allows...

From an issue I've had with dirty heads, I think it's more that if they can't lock on a standard, they're defaulting to S-VHS ET.

VHS mould? Anyone seen this before?

This image was much more blurrier than I realised, but hopefully it's sufficient.

Some nice red circles to highlight some of it:

VHS player thinks some tapes are VHS-ET but aren't?

I have about 5 tapes I cannot convert as my S-VHS player (Panasonic NV-HS830) thinks they are VHS-ET. It's automatically picking this up and of course the playback is broken, because they aren't. Has...

I want to make an update on this as it might be helpful to someone else. I got another around 25+ year old tape and it had the exact same issue. I was starting to wonder if maybe the same VCR was...

I went and bought a remote for the VCR so I could enable manual tracking. I was able to get it into a stablish state and got a half decent capture for it. Audio is still very "warbily" though.

So I can take one of my old VCR from storage, try and find an alignment guide on YouTube and try and track it that way?
Pity I'll have no access to my older VCR for a while with lock-down, but I'd...

What VHS error is this? Would TBC fix it?

So it was all going well until it wasn't.

I've gone through quite a few tapes with my Panasonic NV-830 + ES10 setup and it has been wonderful. No dropped frames or anything. Now I have this tape...

No, just this one tape.

>Maybe the tape you are using has damage

I was thinking that, but I just can't see how a tape can stick at just one point with the way the mechanism works? The fact...

What format do you store your VHS captures in?

Just wondering this.

I'm getting 5000-8000kbp/s at 720x576 with H.264 at Q=18, because of how noisy the captures are (this is with quite heavy filtering btw). I remember back many moons ago that...

Panasonic NV-HS830 stops tape, rewinds before tape end?

I seem to spot an issue today where this VCR stopped a tape and rewinded it to the start when it was only 90 minutes in. Is this a setting or something? I'm not sure why it would do that.

Experienced VHS viewers requested - Can you have a look at this capture plz

I recently posted a thread where I was trying to see if my setup was acceptable before I start backing up VHS tapes. I'm not familiar enough with analog to know what's an error, and what's...

I did indeed read the link in full, and as I've said, I've ruled out the cables being an issue as using the VCR as pass through gave a flawless image. It's either the playback or recording that's...
