Video8 mono capture into stereo?

I have been recording some Video8 tapes that were captured on a mono camera. I didn't use a Y-splitter out of the camera, since I thought that functionality was captured in the original cable...

Weird valleys in histogram, 0 sharpness?

Hoping to get started soon capturing in VirtualDub with my ATI 600 USB (thank you LordSmurf!). I noticed while trying to drop to zero sharpness my histogram looks weird with pronounced "valleys"....

Just to confirm - this is related to using DV to pull across non-digital 8mm; normally the recommendation would be to capture over S-Video on these too (not just VHS)?

Is it suggested to capture my video in lossless format (already have huffyuv installed on VirtualDub)...
