Recording analog video directly to lossy codecs such as MPEG using a DVD recoder is one of the lowest-quality methods for digitizing home tapes. It increases the original noise levels and makes cleanup extremely difficult, in come respects often impossible. Analog sources are for cleanup and restoration are usually captured to a PC using specialized codecs for lossless compression, and processed using apps like Avisynth and
Virtualdub. "Editors" are used for editing, not for cleanup.
