How to program Panasonic ES10 remote?

I picked up a Panasonic DMR-ES10 and bought a remote separately (N2QAKB000055). The remote powers the ES10 on and I can also use the Input Select on the remote to set the ES10 input. However, I can't get into any menus (functions, display, setup etc) on the remote don't do anything on the ES10...do I need to plug it into a TV to see the menus? Or program the remote etc?

There's nothing to program.

The remote is probably just broken. In some settings, remotes were consumables, wore out in time.

I can confirm that is a model that should work with both ES10 and ES15.

So I just bought another remote and the same result...remote powered the ES10 on, and I can change inputs, open/close disk drive but nothing happens when I press "setup, functions, sub-menu etc". Any other ideas to try? Thanks!

Well I just connected it to a monitor as well (probably should have done that first) and looks like there's no picture either. May have just purchased a dud...bummer. Seller said it was working but I have yet to have that same luck.
