Hi,

I have read this very useful guide at http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...-settings.html

I am capturing hi8/video 8 tapes as per details below in virtualdub and I have some questions:

Resolution: 720x576
PAL/NTSC: PAL
FPS: 25
Colour space compression: YUY2
Compression: Huffyuv V2.1.1

Questions for best quality:
Q1: YUY2 compression = Predict Median or Predict Left?
Q2: RGB Compression = Predict Gradient or Predict Left?

Once I have captured, and I start applying filters outside of capture mode in virtual dub etc

Q3: What should my video compression settings be for Huffyuv – I assume the same?
Q4: Video Colour depth – what should be set for “decompression format” and “output format to compressor”?

I believe the filters only work in RGB, so should I convert to RGB if doing filter work to avoid going from YUY2 to RGB over and over again loosing quality? Can I capture in RGB to start with?

Q5: Should “smart rendering” be on or off?

Thank you.

Always YUV (YUY2, etc).
Never RGB.

Color depth always YUY2 for capture/VHS work.

Always keep lossless intermediary codecs during restoration, editing. Only compress down to MPEG or H264 on final output. I use both Huffyuv and Lagarith myself, depends on project software workflow in use.

Let the filters convert to/from RGB, don't try to help it. Master in/out is a YUV.

You can only smart render without filters. That's a no-reencode mode.

Thank you for your help. Excuse my ignorance...

Therefore should I change colour depth from "automatic" to "YUY2" when editing to make sure nothing happens? or can I trust it under automatic?

In terms of quality:

YUY2 compression = Predict Median or Predict Left?
RGB Compression = Predict Gradient or Predict Left?

Never automatic. Computers are dumb tools, make mistakes (more than humans).
Leave Huffyuv on defaults.
