I see some VHS adapters for Hi8 tapes. Is it a good idea to risk it?

There is no such thing. The formats are entirely different.

That's what I thought. German Hama made VHS adapter where one inserts Hi8 tape in. I doubt it works

You must be confusing this with VHS-C / S VHS-C cassettes.
