I am trying to transfer the content on several old VHS tapes to my PC...& would also like to do the same with content I recorded on my DirecTV DVR.

However, I have noticed the picture will brighten for a split second at random times throughout whichever tape or method I am using. This occurs both when I try to record & also when the show is just playing on my pc.

Also, I have an AVT-8710 that I am using.

Any help with what would be causing this problem & how to fix it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

That sounds like Macrovison, or some other for, of anit-copy.
- Do you see it only on the VHS? Or the Directv? Or both?
- Verify your workflow. An working AVT-8710 TBC should remove anti-copy. (anti-copy = false signal error; TBC removes all signal errors)

There's also a chance that you have a defective TBC. It can happen.

Unfortunately I see it on both. I have been trying to do the VHS to PC for awhile but kept encountering the same problem & got frustrated...was hoping for different results when trying the DirecTV DVR to PC method but the same thing happens.

When capturing VHS I have the video cable coming from the VCR going into the AVT-8710 & from the 8710 into my PC.

When capturing from DirecTV DVR the the cable comes from the DirecTV box into the 8710 & then the 8710 into the PC.

Is there any way sure way to tell is the 8710 is defective? & what are some other reliable TBCs that sell for a reasonable price.

Thank u!

The DataVideo TBCs don't have the quirks and issues of post-2010 Cypress TBCs (like the AVT-8710).
The TBC-1000 is the most common model.
Note that it's not new anymore, so shop eBay to get one.
