I am looking at a Sony Sl-hf400 says it was reconditioned 5 years ago and in storage for 3. Do vhs transfera out number beta by quite a bit?

It doesn't come up that often. You'll usually find that whoever has a pile of Betamax tapes was an early adopter of technology. The first consumer camcorder sold was the BetaMovie BMC-110. Tapes recorded with that camera have a TON of quality issues if you intend on offering any sort of restoration services. VHS transfers will vastly outnumber anything Beta, mostly because the format "won" by 1984-85.
