Hi friends,

I have a few PAL tapes that were recorded from a digital set-top box mid-00's that have been recorded in the wrong aspect ratio (squished horizontally).

Should I fix the AR at the time of capture (in VirtualDub), or just capture it as-is and then fix it afterwards (when I de-interlace, edit etc). Just seeing what best practice is, which I'm going to guess is cap as-is?

Why they're recorded wrong:
The video coming from the STB was 16:9 (wide) aspect ratio for proper display on the TV, but the VCR doing the recording squished it horizontally into 4:3.
The news broadcast image at the time was 4:3, they just added black bars on the sides to fill the digital widescreen (local studio hadn't upgraded to widescreen yet).

Thanks!

Set the AR flag in the encoding stage.

VirtualDub captures lossless AVI
Lossless AVI doesn't have aspect ratio flags. It's not supposed to. It's intermediary.
Lossless codecs usually do not want 16x9 sizes.

AR flags are set on the delivery (final output) formats like MPEG (for disc), H.264 (for streaming). Some wrappers like MKV also have their own independent AR flags.

In other words: do it later, not at capture time.
