KVCD: KVCDx2 vs KVCD X3

I have really good results with the x2 704x480 template, but I have seen several comments that the x3 template is just as good (or better) when viewed on the TV. My question is this: why would a reduced resolution produce identical results? When I viewed samples from both templates on my monitor, the x2 output looked better.

I haven't put any XVCD's together with x3, but I will be more than willing to give it, a try (with the proper convincing).

So, convince me! Is the advantage to be found in a shorter encoding time, reduced block noise, smaller file size, what's the appeal?

Mine too. Have just finished Spiderman. Over two hours, almost fullscreen and the quality is very acceptable.

(eventhou the final quality was 7.77)

I can now testify that I was a complete fool using the x2 template. The quality on 'Super Troopers' is nothing short of gorgeous!! Granted, since I am still mostly a complete fool, I chose to activate Tempgenc's color-correct AND noise reduction filters, and I am now looking at a 25-hour encoding time for a 98 min movie...

I can be VERY patient when it comes to better results....

Colour-correction and noise reduction can both be done as easily and more effectively through a variety of Avisynth filters. Personally I like FluxSmooth. Did I mention that already?

Once you get used to it Avisynth is so easy you'll be amazed you ever felt intimidated. Go here and download 2.07 and install it as per the instructions, then read some of The Giant Threads(tm) for good scripts to use.

If you need help, and it's about Avisynth in general, shout in the Avisynth forum. If it's about one of my filters specifically (Blockbuster, FluxSmooth, Sampler, etc.) shout in SansGrip's Filters forum and I'll see what I can do.

What is the lowest CQ setting you would goto before you split it up on more CD's?

I've used 11 for my lowest and it looks great on a normal 32" Television.

The best thing to do is to look at your encoded prediction sample. If it looks good for one CD, leave it. If not, then go for 2 CDs

I'm encoding K-19 right now, at 15 (lowest I've had it). I may have to run it through again, It's almost done and the file size (video only) is Over 700 megs. Hopefully I can add the audio and keep it small enough to burn!

I'll keep that 11 minimum in mind if it comes to that!

I've never had to go to more discs. I usually just drop the resolution. But if you don't want to do that, I'd say base your decision on how the sample looks, not what the number is. If you see too many artifacts then go to two discs.

The only way of knowing what is "too many" is to encode lots and lots of samples at different quality levels, then play them on your TV. You'll soon pick up a feeling for what is acceptable and what isn't.

I assume you mean CQ_VBR. I've gone as low as 8-9, but that's pushing it. I'd rather stay in the teens.
