Hello all, and a happy new year!

I have a video cassette, recorded on in SP, and whenever I turn the TBC on on my JVC HR-s8965
the picture goes glitchy and jumps, every 15-20 seconds

turn the TBC off...absolutely fine: well, I say fine, but of course you can see tearing on the verticles.

put in another VHS cassette and it plays just fine, and other VHS tape, plays just fine
so it is this particular VHS cassette that is the issue.

any thoughts on how to "fix" it?

Should I do a tape transplant, perhaps? or do you think running it FF/RW might help?

TBC causing vertical (non-technical) jitter is a known issue. It happens with some tapes. It's the tape, not the VCR.

The only fix is to use a Panasonic S-VHS VCR, or a Panasonic ES10 as passthrough. But these methods both have quirks too, and it not 100% guarantee to play the tape fine. The tape may be bad everywhere.

The signal is the issue, so transplanting the tape clamshell will not accomplish anything.

Ahhh that's annoying :/

I suppose the other option is just to turn the TBC and live with the tearing.

is there a specific reason it has to be a Panasonic ES10? Could I use any old thing to do the pass through?

I have a useless Funai dubber I could pass it through?

(sorry for using the F word! )

Passthough was an unusual and unique feature not found elsewhere. You must have the DMR-ES10 or DMR-ES15.

Funai = fun, aye! = toy

The other option is to send the tape out to have it transferred by somebody with the right equipment.

Living with tearing was really quite miserable, and is what we had to do in the 90s and early 2000s. Having the ability to fix tearing was a major milestone for VHS capturing, along with the ability to remove chroma noise. It's all so effortless these days.

There are Funai DVD recorder and combo units that do passthrough correction, but I'm not sure whether they correct tearing. And overly bright sources cause the AGC to flicker heavily.

So what I ended up doing, as I used all my budget up (for the second) on the JVC and HD600USB is.....

The Funai doesn't have an S-video output for the VHS half (it's a DRVR B778) SOooo,

It's playing from the funai...via scart...into the JVC HR-S8965...and via S-video into the capture card.

I will just have to grin and bare it until budget allows for that one VHS to be transferred elsewhere. Hopefully there aren't any more like that in this stack!!

When your project is done, resell the hardware. It retains its value. That will give you back some budget dollars.

The thought crossed my mind, but I kind of like the idea of keeping it around as I'm growing quite fond of finding out whats on old VHS tapes! =)

Threw my toys out of the pram and bought a DMR-ES15. Thank you for the advice, can't wait till it arrives!

*edit*

I am just wondering what the flow would actually be, at the moment it's just S-Video from the JVC into the PC.
Looking at the back of the DMR-ES15 it doesn't seem to have an S-Video input. So do I switch to Scart all the way?

and wouldn't that lose some quality? o.o

It has an S-Video input on the front, behind a panel.

The TBC function works with all inputs on my NTSC DMR-ES15.

Ahh, that's brilliant, thank you for clearing that up!

I'm now under the impression you turn the TBC in the JVC off, then feed it via S-Video into the ES15 then out the S-video and into the PC, and everyone is happy!?

Correct.

pass-thru tbc is active on Line 1 input in back of the ES15. If you want to avoid motion ghosting or smear, turn off Panasonic's dnr.
