Why konspire was taken for official release tool ?

I'm currently broadcasting a (big) files and I have no clue about how many people currently DL it, what parts they are and if there is a complete source somewhere.

In fact you can know NOTHING about what is distributed on the network. I won't let my computer on for eternity

I really don't find this tool efficient and will surely stop to use it asap.

Damn right Dialhot
I have been thinking the same since I tried Kast also.
This tool can be very efficient when we talk about the time it takes to broadcast everything but we have no clue on what it's doing...
Geez, I don't even know if I downloaded or uploaded something yet.
Come on guys, there must be an alternative
Cheers

You can know that by clicking on "status". Il gives you the DL and UL abndwith currently in you by the program.

If you look carefully, you'll see that already there are many copies of the KVCD samples. You can see this, because it shows up in the "catcher" link every once in a while.
So, for example, if I shut down my Kast, anyone else who has subscribed to the channel, is actually broadcasting too
So there are more sources, as time goes by.
If I want to update, or add something to a channel, then I can re-broadcast something new in the channel, and everyone subscribed will pick it up automatically. That's the beauty of this program.
Already, I see some "KVCD" content floating around in the Konspire network
It's like the developer said: "It's Gnutella, turned around "
This morning, I woke up, and received a nice Music Video ( Thanks ) and I'm currently receiving another one.
Just check the channel "DukeMPG Pop Music Videos"

For sure, that is called P2P Karl, and it's not a scoop !
You start to share the parts you have as soon as they are on your disc and become a "source" for this part.

But if the original seeder (me for instance) want to disapear, how can he be SURE that there is at least ONE source for EVERY piece of the file ?
With Bittorent you can know that. With Edonkey (or emule or shareazaa) also. But not with Konspire.

Hi guys,
I've checked that lots of times and I don't have any figures although my cable modem is running like hell.
So I should have already received something right? Wrong in my case.
All the data folders are empty...
Does this baby run if I have Blackice Defender running?
Maybe this is the problem. If so I'm giving up right now.
What about Torrent? It seemed like a great way too.
Cheers

It's a complete different approach. Kast can scale well over BitTorrent, or any other current P2P technology. Read here: http://konspire.sourceforge.net/BitTorrent.shtml
Although with the current technology bandwidths and number of users, I guess it's about the same. Only if there were millions of users connected, then Konspire would scale well beyond others.

What's the sense of that
Imagine that you uploaded every piece of your file, except ONE piece.
Now 1000 users download all parts except that ONE part. So you now have 1000 users with an incomplete part
So it's the same as if you started to upload, and just before you finished, you disconnected. Nobody has the file. If you had uploaded the complete file, say to me, now there are 2 copies. Now 2 users start downloading one from you and one from me, and now there are 4 copies, and the tree starts to grom. Read the reference above for a full explanation of how it scales.

Yes, and then when ther are a couple of pieces missing, you sit and wait for hours (or days!) until someone with those parts connects. If he never connects, then you have thousands of users with a broken, unuseable file.

BTW, check your uplink speed, because I subscribed to your channel, and I'm currently 3% download done ( as seen in the status of your channel )

You don't understand that it is EXACTLY what I want to avoid
I do not want to go BEFORE all parts were DLed at least once.
But Konspire NEVER tell me what pieces were DLed yet and which ones are NOT.

So to be sure that I won't let the community with one part missing I must virtually let my computer on FOR EVER !

What kind of P2P software is that if you can't even decide when you shared enought a file and when you musn't remove it because it's to soon for that

I didn't wait for konspire to know how P2P sharing works !

But with konspire it's the same

The only difference between Konspire and the other is (I repeat to be sure to be understood) that when you are the original seeder of a file YOU CAN'T NEVER REMOVE THE FILE FOR YOUR SHARING because you can't know if someone else have the complete file or not.

When I seed a file on bitorrent, I know exactly when I can stop to share a file (I even use a client where you can set the limit automatically like "stop
sharing when average sharing for that file is 125%").
I put the file on emule and I can say to you that at the moment I write this message, the fiel was asked 4 time by 3 different people and the average sahering for this file is 10%. That means that if I remove it now from my shared directory, there will be 90% missing for ever.

But the copy I put on Konspire who can say how it is ditributed at the moment ?

Sorry but in France with have very little upload speed (16 Kbit/s)

Hmm,
Phil, I think that what Karl meant to say is that he knows he has 3% downloaded.
Our question should be: how did he know?
This Kast thing might be good but it has a baaadd interface.

100% downloaded, and now automatically being uploaded to someone

Simple
I go into the "KVCD.net - Dialhot's channel", and I see the % of the file being downloaded.
the complete .rar file was received ( which totals ~150MB uncompressed)
DAMN, Looks good Phil

That means that the destination client can know what the original source can't. The problem for me is always the same : this morning when I woke up, I need to reboot my PC but I didn't do because I didn't know how was the distribution of the file on the network. I knew that for emule the file was shared a 1.3 (means 130%) so I can stop to share. But not for konspire.

@Dialhot,

I am not 100% sure about this, but I guess each time you completelly uploaded some file to a user, if you go to status page, "transmission" will show "1" point for each person you have completelly uploaded. So I believe you just have to wait until "transmission" has at least 1 point to reboot/shut down your computer.
It seems that Kast does not show for the original sender how much he has sent to each person, but the receivers can know how the upload is going.

@rds_correa
I used blackIce Defender some time ago but gave up since it gives no idea about what it's doing. You have to be able to receive connections in port 6085. Probably you're already receiving something (go to status, if downstream is bigger than zero, you definatelly are) Then you can go to received and check each channel. Infortunatelly, the interface does not show (yet) which ones are downloading stuff, so you have to find by clicking in each channel.
