Hi there!

Happened today after installing and deinstalling Nemo codec pack.

When I go into virtualdub I open the file. I change audio->Full Processing
Mode. Then I do File->Save wav. It then says:
Code:
Error initializing audio stream decompression:
The requested conversion is not possible.
Check to make sure you have the required codec.
Then when I did File->File Information I noticed under Compression it
had "Unknown (tag 0055). So I'm guessing that means it doesn't see the
codec. But GSpot says it's installed and I can hear the sound when I play
the avi so I'm guessing something with virtualdub isn't right.

What can I do to fix this problem?

Hi JoZ

I had this problem once. It sounds like the audio is MP3. Just use Audio->direct streamcopy->save Wav.
Name the audio "audio.mp3.wav" and after that rename the audio to "audio.mp3"
Then use HeadAC3he to convert to wav or MP2.

Regards

The audio could also be in AC3 format.

It's in ac3 format for sure and I'm able to extract it with avi2wav. That's
not the problem. The problem is I'm getting that message from vdub and
I don't know what to do to make it working again. It was working just fine
but as soon as I installed and deinstalled nemo pack it broke somehow.
I installed back nemo and vdub started working but with lotsa warnings
about hacked codecs that nemo installed. So finally I deinstalled nemo
again and now I don't have a single codec in my system. Damn! I'll try
after work to fix it. All I was looking for is if someone had same
experience with vdub and hmmm somehow let me know what nemo could
broke. I'll install divx, xvid, lame3, ac3filter and I'll see how it'll work. I
hate when I'm breaking the system like that and loosing so much time to
restore it back to normal. I'll keep you guys posted to let you know what
the bloody problem was. Thanks for the advices.

Hey JoZ,

Sorry to hear about your codec problems. Nearly every forum posting I've ever read on any of the "popular" websites regarding the Nemo Codec Pack has been negative and said that the thing caused nothing but headaches. As a general rule of thumb, I think it's usually recommended to install whichever codecs you might need on your system individually if possible, and only install them if/when you really need them. That's probably about the best advice I've read on the matter. Good luck.

hey JoZ,

I just had this same problem too. I got that same error with VDub and Avisynth. Without dealing with the codecs, I solved the problem by loading the avi into Goldwave and saving the .wav. It was a two-parter so I had to load the second avi, copy and pasted it to the first. Then encoded the wav to mp2 with HeadAC3he.

Doki doki (like my son says)! I do have fresh installation of XP Pro after
all. I was trying almost anything to fix vdub and the problem wasn't only
with vdub but with all the codecs. Just don't ever use nemo. As simple as
that.

And 1 very small suggestion. If you are doing fresh install of your OS
backup it with ghost. It'll save you time.

System was acting strange, very strange. Deinstalling nemo and all other
codecs and I was still able to play movies. Deleting all divx.dll, xvid.dll,
lame.dll blah blah... still sound. I know sounds impossible but that's was
the reality. When I deinstalled nemo it removed some software from the
system that wasn’t installed by it (wild guess but what else should I think
of) & @ da same time it left codec dlls… not nasty but worst.

I totally appreciate your advices guys. 100% agree with dazed&confused.
Install only codecs that you need and nothing more. NOTHING. Don't ever
think to pick a codec from nero pack.

After all you don't always need to have a codec to be able to extract the
sound. Like rendalunit suggested this can be done with few programs
without codec and it works perfect. I didn't use GoldWave but avi2wav.
Same result. Works!

That's the problem with WinXP. Unless you manually disable the system file protection, it does want to get back the files you want to delete. Very annoying, but fortunately it can be disabled whenever needed.

What do you mean "it does want to get back the files you want to delete"?
