Hi, i tried downlaoding the compatibility test and the new kvcdx3 template played fine but when i try and do a movie its ok but when words like the opening credits come up tghey are all over the screen.

Anyway i'm pretty happy with the 352x480 template but was wondering would i get a nicer picture if i put it to 480x480.If so can anyone see any problems with this resolution.

Thanx

Tom

480x480 is svcd resolution. your player should be able to play it.

This might be due to the Minimum bitrate setting of the templates being too low for your player, especially if this only happens during very dark scenes or credits (when low bitrates can be expected). It might be worth trying a few short test encodes of the problem credits in +50 increments to the Minimum bitrate to see if/when it clears it up (you should still use as low of a Minimum as possible for space-savings).

If 480x480 works on your player (I know I've used it in a pinch), it is definetly sharper and more pleasing than 352x480 resolution. In fact, IMO, it isn't too far off in quality from the x3 resolution, so if you ever have trouble getting a long movie to fit onto 1 disc using the x3 (and you've already tried all the extra filters you can tolerate), then dropping to 480x480 is a good alternative way to gain a bit more space (although it still may not reduce your filesize enough, so you still might end up needing to drop to 352x480). But it's always worth a shot! Happy testing.

What type of monitor (TV) are you outputting to? The video output should be the bottleneck on quality?

If you are going to a TV via S-Video or lower than I thought that anything over 375 lines is really just a waste. The player ends up throwing away data so that it shows the number of lines the video screen can show via NTSC standard.

That is not so much a statement as a question. Can you keep getting a sharper picture when you have a fixed quality level available at the end? Or is that more like adding sound quality to an audio file that is actually outside of human hearing. The data is there but is never actually available functionally?
