I've seen a few posts here and there on PAL -> NTSC conversion, but has anyone written a guide specifically for PAL DVD to NTSC KVCD?

I recently came into posession of some PAL DVDs that are pretty useless to me other than viewing on PC, and would love to be able to same them as KVCDs.

Thanks!

Hi Icarus3000,

You just encode them as PAL (25fps), and you shouldn't have any problems playing the KVCD on a regular NTSC player.
It's not like a PAL DVD, where you can't play it on your DVD player. VCDs, either NTSC or PAL, play in most players.
Try encoding a small clip, and burn it to CD-RW, just to make a test.

You just have to add "AssumeFPS(23.976,true)" in your script and use Besweet for converting the audio using the preset "PAL->NTSC(23.976)".
That's all !

Think also to check the box "format conversion" if you use Moviestacker in order to have the correct resizing parameters.

Two responses from two highly esteemed members of the forum. I'm honored

Kwag's way definitely seems to be the easiest, and I will definitely try it on a small sample first thing tonight when I get home. If I don't actually need to change anything, and just encode in PAL that would certainly "Be Sweet"!

If that doesn't work, I'll try the assumefps and other besweet method.

Cheers!

Kwag:

You were mostly right... I encoded a clip in PAL 544x576, wrote it to a CD-RW disk, and tried to play it on my Pioneer DV-440, and my NTSC TV.

Results:
Audio sounds great and is in sync.
Video looks crystal clear.
Problem: The picture is not centered vertically, it's offset towards the bottom of the screen by about ~25% of the screen height.

Is there a known workaround for this, or will I have to re-encode using AssumeFPS(23.976), and convert the audio using besweet?

Thanks again,
Icarus

Hi Icarus3000,

I think the problem is the resolution. Did you try 352x288 and 704x576

I don't have anything to add- but I have to reencode to NTSC resolutions because my player (sony dvp-nc600) can't handle PAL resolutions (pic is scrambled). It doesn't have any problems with 25 fps though- so I reencode the pal video to 352x240, 352x480, 528x480 or 704x480 with 25 fps and it's fine

Since 25 fps was no problem, I will try with a resolution I know normally works: 544x480.

Will let you know the results!
