I've never had a professional VHS VCR in my life but I'm planning on getting one sometime, but I want to know if the broadcast video systems also apply on videotapes. For example, do VHSes have PAL-B too, or is it just PAL?

Just PAL. (Well, aside from PAL-N and PAL-M.)
Or just NTSC. (Again, aside from NTSC-J.)
And let's not get into the SECAMs!

Before randomly buying a deck, consult the site guides, and ask for advice.

On VHS you have.
-NTSC
-PAL
-MESECAM: Most common variant and playable on almost all PAL VCRs. Color signal is stored on tape similar to PAL, hetrodyned down to 629khz.
-Native SECAM: Used in metropolitan France, aka SECAM-L. The frequency modulated SECAM color signal is down-converted to 1.1Mhz and 1.06Mhz and multiplied by 4 on playback.

PAL-M tapes and VCRs may exist, but would be limited to Brazil only. Anyone here from Brazil like to confirm?
