Camera for a beginner?

Hi,
I'm just starting my adventure with filming. So far, I've been making short videos at parties and weddings, but nothing professional. I've been recording with an iPhone 14, but I know it can't compare to a camera. I'd like to start making better videos, so I need to find a good camera that's easy to use and not too expensive. Could you recommend a camera for a beginner?

Several questions will drive suggestions:

- What is your budget? for a camera, and for accessories such as microphones, editing software, etc.
- What do you intend to do with the video (who is the ultimate used/viewer and how do you intend to distribute it)?
- How serious are you about editing the video, adding effects, etc after you shoot it?
- Do you intend to work with legacy formats (e.g., VHS, Video8 and SD material), or will it be all now video shot in HD?
- Are you looking at doing this as a private personal hobby, offering services to friends and family, or as a cottage industry business?
- Do you currently have gear beyond the cell phone?
- Do you have any experience with photography?

FWIW, many modern cell phones can yield video as good or better than camcorders of bygone days, and the updates to the good old SLR camera have also added excellent video capabilities.

If you're just starting out, I'd recommend a mirrorless camera like the Sony Alpha a6000 or the Canon EOS M50 Mark II. Both are affordable, offer great video quality, and have user friendly interfaces. The a6000 has fast autofocus and a 1080p video option, while the M50 is known for its 4K capabilities. You’ll also find a good selection of lenses to grow with. Pair it with a basic tripod and external mic, and you’ll be set to improve your filming.
