PANASONIC AG-1980 S-VHS VCR - MINT
LOW USE - TESTED WORKING PERFECT

Have a few of these machines for sale. Each one is in perfect shape. It took a lot of work and money to do this. I am crazy about the details. Because of the work that I do with videos, they have to be, any extra errors, like video drop outs and so forth have to than be repaired in software. If you have a drop out in the video it is in the tape. Besides standard VHS errors which happen in older tapes, this machine will not create any extra problems.

What is being sold:
1 Panasonic AG-1980

Serial# available upon request

In general, these are very touchy machines, you never know what you are going to get. 90% of the time, you have a very good chance of having some kind of issue. From herringbone noise, buttons not working, mis-alignment, loading issues, bad capacitors, worn heads, to dull lighting on the front panel.

From dealing with many AG-1980's, I have found many of them have issues. However if you can get one fully working with no issues these are some of the best VCR's around.

(This machine has been reburbished)

All the Bad Capitors have been replaced, pitch rollers, loading, and tracking adjustments.

Over $200 was spent on getting this machine to professional standards.

This is one of the best VCR's ever made!

This AG-1980 was also Professionally Serviced a $79.99 value.

If you are looking to convert your VHS collection to DVD or want the best playback around, take a look at a fully working AG-1980.

Because of the shape this VCR is in, it is worth well over $1,000, no question about that. Is it being sold for $1,000, no......

The price of this unit is 100% negotiable, however if you come in with a low offer it will more than likely not be accepted. Just come in with a fair price and maybe we can do business.

To make an offer just PM my account.

(Shipping is not NON-NEGOTIABLE TERMS)

Shipping:

Shipping in the United States or Canada not really an issue, you just pay whatever the shipping rates are or how you want it shipped.

Because this machine is fully working and mint, it has to be insured for at least $1,000. It protects both the buyer and seller.

Outside of the United States, it is going to cost more to ship and you have to deal with other things, but the same hold true as above.

Payment:
You will be invoiced via Paypal.

100% Money Back Guarantee on fully working

THIS MACHINE IS PERFECT !!!

Post approved.

Notes for buyers:

This is one of the excellent VCRs we suggest here: http://www.digitalFAQ.com/forum/show...uide-1567.html
A broken or "parts only" 1980 often sells for about $80-150. A decent unit, with some wear, and often some problems, usually sell for about $200-300. I've seen excellent like-new (but unserviced) units sell for well over $650-750+ in recent years. The awesome part of this sale is that these have been serviced! In other words, these should be worth even more. Brand new, the Panasonic AG-1980 / AG-1980P S-VHS VCRs had an MSRP of at least $1899.00. Thought I would mention that since no specific price was set.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. These units had full-field TBCs (like having a multiple-line TBC), excelled at playing SLP/EP mode tapes, and had several options for NR/sharpness. If you want top quality NTSC playback, absolutely get one of these VCRs. (I've imported PAL VCRs for that same reason!)

UPS insured/signed shipping from USA to overseas/international locations will probably run about $225-300, based on my past experiences selling similar items. Shipping within USA would often be in the $50-75 range, give or take, based on locations.

Note that the seller is a Premium Member, who has participated in this forum, and has been here for about a year. Based on this information, I think he's trustworthy.

Get one while it's available! I don't see great VCRs like this but once every 4-5 years, at best!

In the market looking to purchase a machine for my old home movies off of VHS and edit on my pc for DVD transfer. I am new to the forums here and upgraded to premium to benefit from all the information on this site. I currently have a VCR which just doesn't cut it (video-quality wise) and need a high quality machine. I have done a lot of research on the site and have decided on two different units. One is the AG-1980 and the other is the JVC HR-S9911U. Either looks to do the trick well so I guess depends on which I can get the best deal for. Deter, how much are you asking for your units? I am very interested.

I will have a better idea next week. I might have a big job that requires it, just need to confirm with the customer. If thats your location on the auction, I can do direct pickup to save on shipping and risks of damage during transport. I have been browsing ebay, but its usually pot luck what you get, even with the units refurbed by video equipment dealers.

MSUDawg, NJRoadfan, ...

If you want good units, buying from deter would be my suggestion. Based on past conversations in posts (here and elsewhere), and even PMs and emails, I don't doubt that he's spent a good amount of effort and funds restoring these units to peak condition. And that's not something you'll see very often. (I'm even tempted to grab one of these, but I cannot justify the costs right now -- it would just be an extra unit "in case" it was needed, should current JVC and Panasonic VCRs in service ever go tits-up. Neither of you are in my position, however.)

MSUDawg,

You got to be freaking kidding me. I purchased my 1st computer that I owned, not the Apple IIC from my parents. But my college PC from Walmart in Starkville. Casino winning from Philly. Was kind of sick using the computers in McCool hall. Yea I am an MSU alumni.

Anyway...

I own both JVC units and the Panasonic units. I think you need both. The JVC decks are good with some tapes. However, I think the AG1980 picture is better, because it uses a different type of NR not killing the detail. With Neat Video on low levels you can turn VHS tapes in to amazing quality.

The JVC decks are not as complex machines, they don't have hundreds of capacitors that basically control how the machine will function.

To purchase a good working JVC deck is pretty easy but to find a good AG1980 is rare. On most of these machines the caps go bad. You can hear the hum see the random pulse noise in the picture.

If you look at the front panel, the color is dark and it takes a while to warm up, you got a bad unit.

The AG1980 machines were miss-used, over used, to worn heads the lot.

However in many cases a good working AG1980 will have the best picture out of any VCR.

I run everything on an HD LCD TV with HDMI cables so I can see the flaws in the video a lot better than on an old school normal TV. Some of the older dullish videos, the JVC deck doesn't work that well. Some of the videos with different type of noise the JVC decks work better.

For example. I got in someone's VHS to DVD copy, it was a terrible copy. But the recording played nice meaning no tracking issues. Really couldn't clean it using software, the noise was too great and too messed up.

The only way to restore this video was to go back to VHS.

Now after testing this DVD..

I found it recorded better to the AG1980 and played back better on a Pro-Line JVC deck.

That was how it was restored.

Issued back to digital than cleaned in neat video, and now it looks amazing.

The way I am doing this is make me an offer to what the value is to you, and than we decided what to do.

NJRoadFan,

Not really doing local pick-ups no idea where you are located anyway.

Doing insurance on the shipping if anything does get messed up it is fully insured. If anyone who purchases these units doesnt like them or feel they are not up to spec, send them back for a refund.

This was not easy to fully get these to top shape, it took a lot of work. Most repair guys have no clue and will more than likely mess up something than fix it. It really depends on what your needs are, you can even mess with the alignment.

I have an AG1980, that will basically track any tape, which is like priceless.

From working with many AG1980's, every unit seems to have it own personality. The ones that are for sale in this forum, have pretty much the same personality as each other and that is why I don't need them.

(When I first got them, they all had different issues, so they were like playing a different type of VCR with each unit)

The JVC units seem to not have random personalities they seem to function pretty close to the same with each unit even different models.

I have a few JVC decks but don't want to sell them......

I do a lot of restore work on videos. (Crazy with the details)

Take a lot of stuff that is really bad on your normal VCR and improved the quality.

A lot of the work is done on junked tapes.

However if the tape is pretty bad, loaded with errors in the picture, no machine with get it to run correct.
(A lot of different factors in this but that is the general rule I found) -- I have 20 different VCR's.

Now the errors may play different on different machines but they are still in the video, sometimes they can be fixed. That is kind of rare. In gerenal if they are grained in to the tape they will get worse over time.

If the sound is terrible u can turn off the HI-FI or make it Linear with the AG Units, you have to play around with this. You are not stuck...

If it crackles u play with the tracking...JVC seems to crackle more than the AG's.

That is the biggest issue that is faced. (Poor Quality Recordings)

Pretty much the SVHS 7900 to 9800 JVC decks and AG1980's track the tapes kind of the same.

To get more advanced, You have to play with the VCR Alignment to be able to change the tracking.
(If you don't know what the hell u are doing, don't do this)

That is how u get some of the really poor tracking tapes to track......

In the AG1980 in LP mode, you may get noise in the picture on the far right, left side or on the bottom. You need to play with the tracking until it is removed. This does take some work and eye for detail. If you are not really looking at the picture in detail u will not see the noise. SP tapes normally not a problem. SLP tapes the tracking is at the top or bottom of the picture.

That same noise will also be played back on the JVC decks the NR filter will clean this up a bit and you really need to look even closer to see those little wavy tracking lines in those locations.

You can play a tape on an AG1980 with in 2 seconds I can tell you if it is SP,LP, or SLP....

With in a few minutes I can also tell you what is wrong with the AG1980, if it has issues..

I use these too much, they are my toys.....

Did work on a few tapes were the record mode switched in the video, I saw this in 2 seconds...Than had to make adjustments during the video editing.

What kind of adjustments? It has to do with grain in the video and getting the blending of the LP and SLP to form a picture that is the same...more advanced that just using a VCR.

On some of the really bad tapes, once you get it tracking correct don't stop the tape, let it play out and keep recording until it is done.

With the AG units sometimes you can stop the tape, and hit play really fast, the tracking will be kind of close to what u had before you pressed stop. To improve the tracking even more, you hit FF for like 5 second, than as soon as that is done, you hit the tracking buttons until u get a stable picture. It if it not tracking at all, remove the tape and play a stable tape, than try again.

Sometimes run a dry head cleaner to help...More advanced play the head cleaner backwards....

High end VCR's make the world of difference. However tape restoration is something I have not fully figured out.

I can get AG1980 units fixed from doing this...It is not a big business to be honest and the repair costs can be high....

If the heads are shot, u have to replace them...

It may cost more than the selling price of the machine to get it restored....

Sometimes it could be so bad, that u junk the machine...

Buying these machines for parts is stupid......

I bought one of these machines from deter. He shipped it immediately after payment, it arrived ridiculously well-packaged (double-bubble wrapped, then about 2 cubic feet of packing peanuts around that, in a sturdy shipping box, and it was exactly as he had described it. He is a 5-star seller and I recommend him to anybody looking to buy one of his machines.
