I am thinking about going to my friend's college dorm to watch one of my rare VHS tapes, and the only VCRs he has there are a Toshiba and the Sanyo I mentioned. Is it a Funai? I want to make sure none of my tapes ever go in a Funai unless they are moldy and I need to clean them.

No, judging by the service manual it looks like it's from one of the last generations of Sanyo designed units. Some 2000s ones I've seen have been also have Daewoo or LG guts so not sure when they switched to being made by funai or whether it happened at the same time in all markets.
