Best place to ask the question may be the Adobe PP or other NLE forum.

Some NLEs may be able to read the ProRes file but not save edits to the same codec.

Definitely Virtual Dub, because of the simple, realtime-adjustable histogram. Depends on the capture device though (the IO Data GV-USB2 works well with VDub).
