Howdy,

I have a NV-8420 that refuses to properly move any tapes at all. I've run into this issue with many different VCR's before it, but could never figure it out. Is there anything that might immediately stand out as a possible cause for this problem? All other functions, ones that don't interact with the tape, are functional and there is no structural damage.

Link below for the VCR trying to operate itself.

Thanks

It is not as simple as you may think, there is a reason why they were VCR technicians back in the day, You would need a service manual, take it a part and find out why it would not go into playback mode, My hunch telling me it's the mode switch, but can you take my word for it? See?

I actually have the service manual for this guy, I just don't know what would cause it to act like this. The manual can tell me all about how to work and remove and calibrate the parts but I can't ask it why it won't play. I think the best way to put it is trying to ask what usually causes a VCR to act like this.

The service manual is not a troublshoot guide, it helps you navigate your way into troublshooting by giving you the numbers you are looking for and the test procedures required to identify the problem, If you've never fixed a VCR before then it is going to be a long learning curve.
