Dumb (??) question: what's the TBC board on these VCR's? NO board is labeled TBC.

I believe that you will find the bulk of the TBC-related components on the Y/C board (aka Y/C pack) and its daughter boards.

Hey guys! Don’t mean to revive an old thread but curious if there was ever an update made to the list to include AG-1980p caps?

I was lucky enough to snag a set of two for $500, one “working” (albeit with some negligible differences in video quality when changing settings which tells me some of the caps for the TBC and other features are going out) and another that works mechanically but the picture is nearly non-existent.

I was hoping to recap the non-working unit and would love to place as few orders as possible for caps. Has anyone else developed their own cap list from this one for their 1980p?

Thanks so much again for all the dedication and hard work!

The spreadsheet covers both 5710p and 1980p.

As for a current buy-list... looks like you get to be the next person to plug in the data and discover what's actually available today, and from who.

Whatever you learn will be mucho appreciated by others, I am sure! :-D

Yes I’m excited but definitely a little nervous to jump in to such a big project. But glad to have such a helpful community to point me toward what I need!

Did you end up recapping yours? If so did you use just the spreadsheet to order or did you order the additional 14 + 2 that the other user was talking about in previous comments that were specific to the 1980p?

I’ll be disassembling next week to check out the power board to place the order. Hoping the two “mystery” caps are pretty clear and easy to identify, but we’ll see!

Be aware that there were some minor changes to the Y/C board over time, so check your board against the listed components. There is a brief mention of this change in a different thread.

The main issue with the AG1980 SMD caps is poor electrolyte in them that fails over time. Not an issue for the radial and axial lead caps of that era. This problem hit not only the AG1980 but a number of PC motherboards from that era, as well as other video gear from that time frame including some Canon camcorders, specific Sony VCRs, etc.

It is easy to screw up circuit board traces when working on SMDs, so practice a bit first, and be careful.

Thanks for the advice! Yes thankfully I've got a bit of knowledge about soldering SMDs, and maybe more unfortunately knowledge of how to repair torn traces. My soldering iron and hot air station are ready to go! I'm just hoping that the process is relatively straight forward as I cross reference the old caps with the new, but we won't get there until we try.

I rolled back to Mistateo's comments and actually used his list to add the 14 "missing" caps to my shopping list. Worst comes to worst I'm out a few extra bucks on caps I didn't need, but hopefully that'll cover everything I need (besides the two additional power supply caps I have to tear down to find).

I'll definitely be taking care to document the process and caps used, as well as the (hopefully successful) results. If I can help make this process a little more straight forward maybe it will seem a little less daunting in the future.

Thanks again for all the help!

If you have the necessary gear it would be interesting to hear your results, the percent of caps that you found to be out of tolerance. Enjoy the process.
