Hi all,

I've owned this since it was new and have just started having the issue seen in the attached movie. What would you do first? Sending it to someone that knows what they are doing would be good advice, if that is the consensus, as I've never attempted VCR repair but am ready to start (with manuals). I've successfully cleaned and repaired vintage camera lenses so I'm not a complete newb with precision tools and the necessary patience to use them. Thank you!

Turn off the lights of your lamp ! This deck has tape sensors very sensitive to ambient light.
Looks like double speed , clean the control head. (On the right side). (Qtip+ IPA 90 % alcohol)

It could also be the pinch roller is not pressed against the capstan shaft or a capstan motor driver board electronic issue, bad caps, bad hall effect sensor or control chip.

Some Panasonic VCRs go into fast play with the top cover removed. OP, is the JVC problem there with the top cover in place?

Thank you for the replies! Interesting development today. First I tried it with the cover on and got different symptoms. It would fast forward on its own. (Not shuttle forward in play mode, but instead unload the tape and fast forward). I can stop it from fast forwarding, it comes to a stop, then hit play, which it does for a few seconds, then flies into fast forward again. I tried a different tape. Same. I then cleaned the control head and tried again. Same (cover on). I took the cover off and its back to the symptom shown in the attached movie - it shuttles about a minute ahead and turns off. Suggestions?
