When removing the Mechanism assembly only, unhook the two spacers connecting it with the Main board assembly with pliers from the back side of the Main board assembly first, and then remove the Mechanism assembly.

On page "1-1" (43 in the PDF). This instruction is wrong and makes no sense (there's no way to access the hooks on the other side unless you've removed the entire board from the chassis, as they don't line up with any holes in the base).
Instead, just unhook the spacers from the mech assembly. This allows you to remove the mech while leaving the main board in.

of you course you can, you have to "pinch" them with a pair of pliers and they will pop out releasing the chassis, remove the 2 big screws also ( see attached picture)

Perhaps you misunderstood what I'm trying to say. My point is that while manual instructs you to unhook the spacers from the main board, it makes much more sense to unhook them from the mechanism assembly instead.

oh ok yes a mistake i believe, last time i checked i couldn't unhook them from the M.B (glued) , the proper way is from the chassis side.
And if it's the first time you do it you might aswell remove the 3 little screws that maintain the capstan motor, it'll be much easier ( the belt below will be kinda stuck though, careful with that).

Hi, I am planning to take the mech out to service the mode switch for the first time on my 9600. Having issues after fast forwarding a tape it doesn't wind the tape slack and the tape then gets stuck when I eject it. So my question is, by removing the capstan motor screws won't it detach the motor completely from the mech when I take it out without the motherboard?

if you remove the 3 screws holding the capstan motor on the chassis then it'll stay down , still connected with the board. The downside is the belt that'll still be rolled around the pulley on the chassis side (Clutch) . So just lift the chassis enough to have some slack then remove the belt. Then you can lift it all.
Obviously before lifting ensure you disconnect all cables (3: drum, drum motor, A/C head) especially the drum one

A nice little pic of the underside of the mech (hr-7600) just for you
Depending on the model/brand it can be hard sometimes to just lift it all (possible breakage/twisting), hence that's why i recommand you try to remove the capstan screws.
let me know how it went down
