Best DVD recorder?

My dad got himself a Magnavox DVD recorder that's, as far as I can tell, works very well. What would be the best DVD recorder on the market right now? I'd like to get one myself, but I want to choose carefully.

Hp , I liked the zenith I used to have . It would improve quality w/out exspensive hardware.
Made some vhs look little cleaner.

This Rca is nice little machine for the cost.
for the record - you need the govid CT2 for macrovision on vhs & DVD

The older RCA models & Panasonic the RXII works fine.

newer you need CT2 works great ( thanks again mark)

Well dan, you knoooow..... Since no one goes to chat anymore. I have to do all my tormenting out in the open now lol

I liked zenith (LSI chipset). I rented a few . The others were ok.
While the zenith was easy to use. Improved on quality . No additional hardware or by pass etc .
Also had a built in fan to keep it cool.

The panasonic EMR??? LS has it lol

Did the samething in SP mode only. Tend to throw fits. shut down in the middle of recording, get hot easily. Problems finalizing on occassion. Pain in the arse !

Phillips recorder - Workded when it wanted to lol

This RCA only encountered one problem.RCA said it 's a glitch in the system. Is known to do that.
They are working on fix for it.
Sometimes when you turn it off. It will reset itself to different video resolution.

Hmmm...I'm currently looking at a Toshiba D-R400. Looks good for the price. I don't need a VCR/DVD combo, so I'm screening those out, and they jack up the price anyway.

Unless you plan on dubbing vhs tapes I don't see the purpose of a dvd recorder. It would be much easier to record your shows on tivo and then transfer them over to you computer.

I have a JVC-DR1000 or whatever was on sale on ecost not that long ago... I need to myself star recording some stuff

JVC DR-M10 and DR-M100 are both at ecost and are hands down the best recorders ever made, in terms of video encoding quality (cleans up pretty much anything). These are about $50-150, refurbs (good as new).

Next in line would be the Toshiba XS-series. This would also have to be gotten used. I know of some places if you're interested. These had hard drives and run about $225.
