I'm using virtualdub to transfer a vhs. I'm using huffyuv v2.1.1. I've tried to Google search but I'm not really getting a clear answer. An earlier attempt I had 2:4:1. What do these number mean?

It's the ratio of the compressed filesize compared to the uncompressed video coming out of the capture device. So if it would be 75GB per hour in uncompressed format, at 2.5:1 lossless compression it's 30GB per hour.
