VirtualDub error when Overlay while capturing?

I can't get VirtualDub2 to show me a preview of what I'm capturing. If I have Overlay or Preview selected, then Vdub just errors out with something like "CAN'T CAPTURE FILE". (Like a standard message box with OK.) I can get it to capture ONLY if I select "No Display".

Why is this happening?
