How do I transfer Hi8 and 8mm video from Sony Digital 8 DCR-TRV120 Video Camera via FireWire with FireWire to thunderbolt adapter to a MacBook Air with thunderbolt port and external hard drive for storage space? ( After I connect it all up, what then?) I just want to transfer it and take clips from it to keep the good stuff and eliminate the other.

So maybe what I need to know is ...

Do I need to use something other than imovie?

Can I specify to save video to external hard drive in iMovie?

I have Macbook Air (13 inch, early 2014) with thunderbolt 2 port with Mojave 10.14.3 and iMovie 10.1.4 deliberately not updated due to other things it is currently being used for.

I just want to get the video onto a hard drive and then edit to save shorter clips rather than the entire video. I want to save the interesting portions of video without all the "beautiful vacation scenery" and hours long baseball games.

Thank you, letreche34, that is good info, but I do not currently have access to a windows computer with thunderbolt or firewire port. I only have the Macbook air with thunderbolt 2 port.
