Hi8 to DVD copy speed, time counter?

I've had trouble googling this, but I'm using a DVD/VHS Combo machine to copy some Hi8 tapes to DVD. I've hooked up the camcorder to the VCR and timed how long the footage is in each Hi8 tape to fit them into 2hr dvds

However the dvd became full before I'd recorded 2hrs of Hi8 tapes. Eg. after the camcorder says it's played 22minutes the counter on the VCR says 38minutes. Each tech has different playback speeds or something? I'm confused. How does 50mins become 90mins or more?

Edit: Could it just be one tape? I'm timing another one with a clock and the x3 clocks are matching

Not sure I under stand your description.

FWIW: Some DVD recorders allow one to select multiple DVD length modes, e.g., 1, 2, and 4 hours.

Well I started recording(on SP) and after say 22 minutes I noticed the VCR showed 38 minutes of footage had played/been recorded. On the camcorder I had connected it showed 22 minutes had played. The dvd was empty beforehand.

It may be 22 minutes of footage, then 15 more of snow/blank?

Noting this a really lousy DVD recorder for videotapes. It will overexposure, bake in errors (if that camera has no line TBC), and is very blocky/crunchy quality even at 2-hour SP mode (or even XP 1-hour, for that matter).

It is normal for many players (e.g., VCRs & camcorders) to stop their time count when passing over a tape section that has no video on it. The up count will typically resume where it left off when more recording is encountered. The blank section of tape may output either snow or a solid color screen depending on the player. The recorder may continue to record snow or blank screen depending on how it is designed (or in some cases set up).

This is a quick and dirty way to dump video from tape to a DVD, it gives you something you can view. However, it is not the way to get optimum quality or to do any significant editing or restoration of the video.

The OP needs to watch the recorded DVD to see what's in the 38 min footage, pretty simple.

I'm been doing another tape where it happened again. There is very little blank footage, but the camcorders counter is resetting to zero. That will be it

Camcorders can go bad. Since you think it's the camcorder, and I don't readily see a reason to disagree, proper next step troubleshoot here is to see what another camera does.
