Constant inserted frames in VirtualDub?

Capture setup: JVC HR-S7800 -> Cypress AVT-8120 -> ATI 600 USB clone -> VirtualDub w/ Huffyuv

When capturing VirtualDub 1.9.11 the "Frames Inserted" number constantly rises. My captures have no timing sync issues besides seeing these duplicated frames every second or so. Not super noticeable sometimes but absolutely there. Fps is set to 29.97 but if I change the fps to a lower number the "frames inserted" number does slow down but then I start getting Dropped Frames.

My timing Settings are

[x] drop frames
[x] insert frames
[ ]
[ ]
[x] sync audio to video
[ ]
[x] auto disable resync
[x] automatic

These settings work the best for me and no matter how I change them the Inserted Frames remain.

Desktop is not connected to internet, firewall disabled, antivirus disabled, fresh install of Windows 10 LTSC.

Any suggestions?

What is your CPU usage at?

CPU Usage varies from around 15%-30%

The "Inserted Frames" steadily go up even without a TBC or a tape playing. It's deffintely a VirtualDub or capture card issue. But I've poured through all the settings and everything seems to be set as it should be. Everything framerate related is set to 29.97

If you delete the Cypress AVT box from the chain, do the frame drops almost completely go away? If so, I'd say the issue is with the Cypress box. Next thing I'd try would be a different capture card (even if it isn't a recommended one) just to see if you get way less dropped frames. Odds are that it isn't the VCR, but I think the way you'd rule that one out would be to capture from a digital source that outputs composite or S-Video (such as a DVD player) or a 480i game console. My understanding is that a digital source that was just converted to analog composite within the device should really never drop frames if your capture card is working.

I've maintained that one inserted or dropped frame every 3000 frames or so can be normal as that could be a slight clock difference in the source player or TBC versus what the capture device is expecting, but I haven't seen anyone else saying they've also observed this, But that's my personal explanation as to why it would happen. In my case, I've only ever seen a single frame insertion every 3000 or so frames.

...a frame drop every second definitely is not normal though and I would think if the TBC and capture card were working and the capture PC has basic specs and not doing any updates in the background or running some sort of antivirus (I'd disconnect from the internet to reduce the risk of that) that you should never see that.

What are the capture PC specs by the way?

You do also note that the frame drops are visible. I take it that if you are viewing the output of the VCR directly on say an LCD TV that there are no apparent frame drops?

Removing a frame TBC won't prevent frame drops -- at least when the unit is quality, as this specific unit is, as I can vouch for the exact unit in his possession.

With the gear in use here, it's definitely internal to the capture computer. This can be resolved.

This is either I/O (ie, trying to capture to the OS drive), or it's a VirtualDub setting (something simple, like wrong fps).

The culprit was windows 10. May have just been my specific version of windows 10 ltsc I was using, but s fresh install of windows 7 solved everything. 30 minute capture with no dropped or inserted frames (besides the ones you often see right when you press play on a tape)

Tried to avoid downgrading windows for years but here we are. Appreciate interested the help everyone
