Is my CPU good for capturing AVI?

I have following CPU:
ASRock P4i45PE motherboard
Intel Celeron
Two hard disc ATA drives 60 and 80 GB Seagate Barracuda
512+256 RAM
If I will add ATI AIW card will it be ok for capturing AVI from vhs tapes?

I don't not suggest using old P4/IDE systems. Yes, we did it in the 2000s, but it sucked.

You cannot capture to the OS drive, and 80gb will fill with 3 hours of lossless footage. Been there, done that, glad I never have to ever again. 80gb will hold some decent MPEG-2 at DVD specs, using a P4. You need a dual-core for the sub-broadcast (better than DVD) MPEG-2 capturing.

AIW cards are some of the best, but ideally with modern(ish) SATA and multi-core systems. I've not captured on an old P4 in 15+ years now.

Can you do it? Yes.
Should you do it? No.

I want folks to enjoy capture, have capture success. It gets harder with old P4/IDE setups.

At very least, ditch the Celeron, buy the best CPU that fits the board. These days, with eBay, old CPUs are cheap, often under $10.

That's just a motherboard, not a video capture card. But yes, that spec should work.

However, do realize that era of AMD massively overheated. It'd cause dropped frames, heat up your room, and would too often literally melt the motherboard. At the time, Intel was vastly better (and arguable still is, in terms of heat).

I had a very comparable AMD backup capture system about 10-15 years ago. I made the brief mistake of using the config as primary setups, but two of them failed within the year. One sparked and caught fire (64 X2), the other melted the motherboard (Phenom II X4).

What about intel motherbord 775dual vsta? I have read that You recommend 775dual sata2 because of sata 2 connector but it's really that important? Is 775dual vsta also good choice?

After reading forum I have made decision to buy tuner Pinnacle Pctv hybrid tv pro 330e. I have read it’s decent and I can find it at a good price. I have Windows 7 laptop Acer E5 571 52C8 with:
Intel Core i5-4210U
4GB RAM
5400rpm HDD
Matt display
USB 3.2
Will this laptop able to capture? If yes to what Disk I should capture? Thanks.

I’ve recorded a lot of VHS tapes using old computers. It works, but it’s not easy. The hard drive fills up fast, and slow computers, like ones with a Celeron chip, can’t handle high-quality video. When I switched to a better chip, a Core 2 Duo, everything worked more smoothly. I had fewer problems with the video and sound.

If you want to upgrade your computer, it’s smart to check what chips will work with your motherboard. I usually refer to an updated LGA 1151 CPU List whenever I’m thinking of giving an old rig new life.

I believe computer is really not most expensive part. Why not to buy good used Intel i5-4460 (for example) 3,20GHz with 24GB RAM and Windows 7 professional (I use this and few similar with Windows 7 without any problems)? They are cheap now. Simply call your local PC repair shop and tell them you need something like that. I am sure they will be able to find something very fast. And use Raid1 and new HDD and SSD for system. It will be a bit expensive, but Raid 1 and 2 HD from different manufacturers is a must, if you want to sleep peacefully. And read this forums threads, about various capture cards, carefully if you do not need to spend money with trial and error method (because many others already did it before and sheared their experience). And even if card do not work at first try do not give up and read threads again It took a bit time for me to bring Pinnacle 710-USB to work, but now I am satisfied with it .

I have captured with windows 10 and a Pinnacle movie box but I use a windows 7 PC to capture with a Pinnacle 510 I bought from LS now. Windows 7 computers are really cheap but you might have to use Unebootin and the ISO file on the internet archive to unlock if if the owner forgot the password. I like the Pinnacle cards also.

Yes, but maybe he should not focus on a particular card just because he own it? There are alternatives what do not cost an arm and leg. Windows 7, in my opinion, is optimal.

Clarification:

Specifically, the exact sub-version Pinnacle that I have in the marketplace. Not any random Pinnacle, as Pinnacle did/does make a lot of truly awful capture cards (Dazzle, PCTV, etc).

ATI was the same, for that matters, several stinkers like the 550 and 650.

It's never a case of an entire brand being safe, but specific cards. Not even specific models, specific cards, as some are long-lived with multiple production changes over time.
