On clean install of Windows XP SP3, everything goes well. 1TB drive. New partition. Quick format. I then place ATI Catalyst Software CD (180-V01085-100) in DVD-ROM drive and install everything, including the display driver.

After reboot, I see the Windows XP logo screen and then the GPU loses the connection with the monitor, which cannot find a signal (onscreen message cycles between Digital, Analog, Digital, etc.). However, Windows XP fully loads. I verified this by pressing WIN-U-U to shut down Windows XP using keyboard presses.

Obviously the problem is caused by the installation of the official ATI driver on the CD-ROM that shipped with the hardware.

What I tried:
  • Two versions of Windows XP integral edition
  • Two versions of the ATI Catalyst Software (V01085 from my CD-ROM and V01084 from DigitalFAQ)
  • Multiple reboots
  • It's the only card installed is the GPU
  • Tried with only one stick of RAM in the first slot.
The CATALYST 7.97 software suite from my CD-ROM contains the following:
  • RADEON™ display driver 7.97.
  • MULTIMEDIA CENTER™ 8.8
  • HYDRAVISION™ 3.25.0004
  • HYDRAVISION™ 3.25.9004
  • REMOTE WONDER™ 2.2.0.0
Specs
  • Mobo: Asus P4BSE800
  • CPU: Pentium 4
  • RAM: 3GB
  • GPU: ATI AIW 9600XT
  • OS: Windows XP Professional SP3 x86 - Integral Edition 2024.6.6 (Vanilla)

SP3 is known bad version. Do SP2 or Integral Edition, and use the Windows-version ATI graphics driver. Do not overwrite it when installing the video drivers (custom install).

Thank your, Lord Smurf.

I installed Windows XP with SP2 OEM edition (and used my old Dell OEM serial) and during the setup Windows detected my ATI AIW 9600XT and installed the driver (6.14.10.6462 dated 3/23/2004). I loaded VDub 1.9.11, went to capture mode, and it detected my ATI AIW 9600XT.

Then, because I like to punish myself, I installed the official CD (180-V01085-100) and installed the driver, which is 6.14.10.6414 dated 12/12/2003. So the official CD has an older driver than the Windows XP SP OEM disc. Anyway, like with my earlier install of Windows XP SP3 Integral Edition, when I rebooted, the GPU didn't send any signal to the monitor after Windows XP logo. So, I restored to earlier point and not it works again.

I won't bother installing the CD (180-V01085-100) as something about this is causing a problem. I am posting these details here in case it helps someone else.
