To my eye the quality between the two methods looks virtually the same. However, I have not done extensive testing with analog VHS tapes of marginal quality and with known anomalies (flagging, color distortion, sync issues, etc.) to determine if either method is better at managing these issues (i.e.. TBC-type processing of the incoming analog signal). A more detailed, controlled test would be useful.
