Hello. This is my first post here. I am transferring a lot of VHS for a friend. I would like to just do one pass with no post processing due to the amount. My friend wants files that he will view on a computer, tablet/phone, or cast to a TV. He would be happy with it looking decent as opposed to having to be archival quality.
Let me preface this by saying I have read a huge amount of info/forums on the process….so much that I just gave up (I have to get on with it) and started with what I had already which was a Sony SLV-D271P DVD / VCR Combo, an M1 Mac mini, a composite HDMI upscaler into a Guermok HDMI USB 3.0 capture card. Used OBS (settings from tons of forum suggestions, but basically tried 720x480 & 640x480 59.94 yadifx2).
I understand that this is far from ideal, but honestly, after many tests, I’ve been happy with the 640x480 cast to my Vizio. I haven’t sent him anything yet to try on his setup, but he has seen them on my TV & approved.
I’d like to try the S-video output on the Sony so my friend is lending me a windows mini i7 pc (I assume win 10 or 11) so I can get an S-video capture dongle. Affordable options (this is the last purchase I can make on this project) seem to be the Hauppauge USB-Live2 or IOData GV-USB2. I also was directed from this forum to the Startech dongle. If this is the absolute last purchase I can make, which of these would be best (keeping in mind I’m trying to do no post processing)?
If there is another option in this price range that’s fine too. I’m overloaded with info I just need to start this and not spend any more $ beyond an affordable S-video capture device. If it’s not doable and I have to buy more gear (TBC, another deck, expensive capture card) I will just stick with my Mac capture.
Also, OBS sounds like the wrong software. Should I use vdub?
And concerning capturing at 720, I understand why, but what do you do in post? Do you crop it? If so, to what size? I’ve read of several. Again I’m trying to just do one pass, so if I stuck to that, would I just deliver the 720 files with black bars?
Thank you!
