Someone locally was inquiring a working betamax player and wanted a sample of the playback quality as it would be if recorded via DVD recorder. Since I didn't really want to burn a DVD for this purpose, I used a Toshiba RD-XS34U with an external hard drive mod and then copied the file over via
ISObuster.
Player is an SL-HF900 via composite directly to the RD-XS34U. This is from a 1973 film (The Day of the Dolphin), so no idea when the betamax release would have been.
It should be possible to do an S-Video mod to most betamax players, but haven't gotten around to attempting it just yet. Sony did make some EDV (extended definition) machines that did have S-Video output, but they were pretty rare in the USA anyway.
To me, the sample looks pretty good. Posting here in case anyone is curious since betamax and the Toshiba DVD recorders don't get as much attention.
