I have a Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD recorder, which appears to have a line-TBC which stabilizes the video somewhat, and can be used as pass-through while capturing VHS, but it has a big caveat, in bright scenes the picture flickers, it is also visible on the VCR logo screen. Is this normal behaviour or does it have a defect?

When I connect my VCR (JVC HR-S6800EH) directly to the capture card (Matrox MXO2 Mini) it does not flicker.

Attached video examples for both non-flicker and flicker.

I could not see flicker on my tv when watching the clips could you pinpoint a timecode where its visible? Its probably some fault with very bright scenes in the dvd recorder psu if there is some fault but Iam not knowledgable enough.

Hi,

Did you also watch in on a computer monitor?

It's a bit subtle but If you watch closely, the blue color pixels are flickering/wavering up and down fast in the whole flicker.mp4 clip and in noflicker.mp4 it's completely stable.

I could perhaps make comparison recordings of some scene that has a white background too.

Yes if you could record some white screen I think would maybe help. I will see if I can get hold of a better screen at work.

On my home computer it looks like the flicker screen is more stable than the no flicker screen but both do flicker very subtle.
Also the no flicker pixelates more so is overall worse to my eyes. All my vhs viewing have had atleast that much flicker on my tv here at home. Do you have a comparison jvc vcr that flickers less?

Here's a snippet of a recording through the DMR-E50 with a bright sky background, you can see the whole picture flickers, even the darker tree and after the camera is zoomed in on the people and the sky disappears, the flickering stops.

Yes picture is flickering a bit more than usual I'd say. Its definitivetly something with the luminance I don't know what though, but I think something with automatic gain control would lessen the flicker. Hopefully you get better answer from someone else.

Thanks for the help, I also started thinking this has something to do with AGC...

I just found this thread which looks like it's also happening with the DMR-ES10: https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vcr-repair/14447-panasonic-dmr-es10.html so I'll read that one first.
