I have recently acquired a Pinnacle 510-USB capture card and I am attempting to capture HI-8 (using original Sony handycam) and VHS (using JVC SR-MV45 VCR). I am also using a Kramer FC-400 Frame TBC.
The problem that I am having is that when I attempt to capture an AVI using VirutalDub, I receive a dialogue box that says "Unable to start video capture". When I open the VirtualDub log, I find the following: - Plugins: Failed to load "...\ffvdub.vdf": Error initalizing module "...\ffvdub.vdf"
- Connected to capture device: Pinnacle 510-USB (Direct Show)
- Starting capture to: E:\VirtualDub Captures\test.avi
- CapDShow: Unable to transition filter graph to run state: hr = 8007001f ()
- Error: Unable to start video capture.
I am using a recently refurbished workstation with the following: - Windows 7 SP1 64-bit (Clean Install, fully updated)
- 32.0 GB DDR4 RAM
- Intel Xeon E5-1620 v4 (3.5GHz) CPU
- Recently replaced SSD
I setup the system by doing the following: - Installing the 32-bit Huffyuv Codec to syswow64 (https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...html#post11627)
- Installing the 64-bit Windows 7 driver for the Pinnacle USB (http://cdn.pinnaclesys.com/SupportFi...iver_64bit.exe) and then restarting the computer.
- Plugging the capture card into a USB port. Windows identifies the device and installs the driver.
- Downloading Crossbar Thing (https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...html#post58837) and using it to set the video input to S-Video.
- Downloading VirtualDub 1.9.11 + Filters.rar (https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...lters-pre.html)
- Configured VirtualDub for capture according to this post: https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...-settings.html
My troubleshooting thus far has involved the following: - Confirming that the driver was recognized in Device Manager (It was listed as "Pinnacle 510-USB" under the "Sound, video and game controllers" tree with no driver errors).
- Uninstalling and re-installing the driver from Pinnacle (rebooting each time).
- Uninstalling the Pinnacle driver and attempting to use the driver that Windows Update finds (which appears to be the same one).
- Ensuring that Windows Defender and Firewall are disabled (the system is completely offline).
- Changing USB ports that the capture card is plugged into.
- Replacing the USB cable connecting the capture card to the computer.
I apologize in advance if I have missed something obvious in the forms, I am still quite new to this. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to further troubleshoot this.

This is a red flag:

Plugins: Failed to load "...\ffvdub.vdf":

"ff" is the ffmpeg version of something. No ffmpeg should be used anywhere. This suggests that the system has either a nasty system-wide "codec pack" installed, or a bad/wrong install of VirtualDub.
I need to look at my own VirtualDub install on Win7 here. But still tired, eyes burning. I may be MIA for a few days.

In crossbar thing open Pinnacle crossbar to set up device. Set correct PAL-I if in PAL zone (or correct NTSC standard) and uncheck "vcr in" if it is checked by default.
You should see video in preview in virtualdub no need to start capture.

Thank you for the replies. I hope you feel well soon LS!
Regarding the Plugins: Failed to load "...\ffvdub.vdf" error, this appears to be due to the ffvdub.vdf file that is included in the "Plugins" directory of the " VirtualDub 1.9.11 + Filters.rar" download provided in the forms ( https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...lters-pre.html). If I remove this file from the plugins directory, this error message is no longer present. However, this does not allow for me to capture video and the CapDShow error remains.

My tapes originate from North America, so I am using the NTSC_M. I have also unchecked the "vcr in" option. I still do not see a preview and test capture continues to fail with the "CapDShow: Unable to transition filter graph to run state: hr = 8007001f ()" error message.

And you're in Preview mode, not Overlay, correct?
And thanks. I'm kind of in-and-out right now. It may take me a week to get over yesterday.

Yes, I have selected "Preview" from the "Video" menu. Otherwise I have configured settings according to this post: https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...-settings.html

I have tried the YUY2 (No Compression) codec, but there is no change. Also, I have a Pinnacle 510.

OK, not a big difference 510 or 710. Simply try another PC and look what happens. And remember always start Crossbar thing first, set s-video in, leave Crossbar thing open (you can minimize it if you want but do not close) and only then start virtualdub.

Sorry, I forgot to add that I do have access to a Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) computer and I attempted to use the Pinnacle on this machine but I received the exact same errors when attempting to do a test capture under Windows XP.

Then you need to test your system with known working similar card before. Otherwise it is hard to tell by distance what is wrong. Buy a card from LS or send this one for test (or both ). This will save your time.

Thank you for the reply! I actually did purchase this card as part of a workflow from LS, so I'll wait for him to reply to see what he says. I do not have access to a different card to try that at present. I still really do appreciate your help and welcome additional suggestions.

OK, then card is fine, I am sure. Few days ago I spent about 2 hours to bring 710 to work on good fresh XP SP2 on Gigabyte board from 2009 (On 7 all was OK). It works now. But I still not sure where was a problem.

For now, Huffyuv is not germane to the problem. It's just a sidetrack, possibly a complication. VirtualDub (actually the computer) has nothing to do with the compression. You can capture fully uncompressed, without any codec/compression.
What is the exact motherboard being used here? I'm suspecting bad power relay through the USB ports. It's a somewhat rare error, but it happens.
As an example, the AIW USB is externally powered. When using cheap PSU and/or wiring, it can be enough power for the card to be acknowledged by the OS, but the capture preview is green, or nothing, or an error. It's not getting proper power.
The solution may be a PCIe USB card, or another computer entirely (at least for testing purposes).
From what I recall, you were somewhat time constrained on this project (time allowed, travel), so perhaps acquiring another card would be prudent. I'll PM you with another option. Setting up a computer can be the biggest PITA for anything serious, and not just video capture. It requires time and patience, which isn't always available. And so we can pivot.
Microsoft has been a problem in recent years, too. So "fully updated" (as per your 1st post here) isn't always a good thing.

I have tested the capture card on two systems, one running Windows 7 SP1 64-bit and the other running Windows XP SP3 32-bit (with Windows Security Essentials disabled). The system details are as follows:
Windows 7 Computer: - Dell Precision Tower 5810 (Proprietary Motherboard and PSU)
- Intel Xeon E5-1620 v4 (3.5GHz) CPU
- 32.0 GB DDR4 RAM
- Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit)
Windows XP computer: - ASUS A8AE-LE Motherboard
- 600W ATX PSU (Recently replaced)
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (1.99GHz) CPU
- 4GB DDR RAM (3.43GB Useable)
- Windows XP SP3 (32-bit)
