Hello LS and to all the other members who can lend a hand.

I've read several threads, but since I'm still not clear on something, I'm starting my own.

I recently received my Pinnacle (according to the label, model 510 rev.2).

My setup consists of:

2 VHS players:
- Sharp VC-M50
- JVC HR-S7600EU

2 Panasonic DVD recorders:
- Panasonic DMR-EH50
- Panasonic DMR-ES10

1 capture card:
Pinnacle 510

PC with Windows 11 64-bit

VirtualDub64 1.9.11
HuffYUV

My question is about the configuration, especially getting the capture card to work, which didn't work initially. It seems the PC detects something in the component manager, but neither VirtualDub nor any other software detects a video input.

Could you explain the steps involved in preparing a set like this, what needs to be installed on the computer, and how to configure everything to start working with it?

Thanks everyone!

Excellent JVC S-VHS 7600 PAL

Non-ideal ES10 to work with. You'll need to watch for line TBC conflicts. JVC line TBC is best 95%+ of the time. And various quality-reducing issues like luma gain and posterization

Excellent "good version" 510 is in your possession now.
Install drivers
https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...html#post71898

Connect all hardware via s-video.
ES10/15 has audio delays, so audio routed VCR>ES15>Pinnacle

Crossbar Thing to swap composite > s-video
VirtualDub 1.9.x to capture.

Verify timing settings in VirtualDub capture mode, screen cap here.

Hi everyone!

Let me explain a bit...

After installing the drivers for the Crossbar Thing and getting the capture card working with the setup... I'm running into some problems.

I've attached screenshots of the Crossbar Thing configuration and of VirtualDub compared to AMcap.

The problem I'm having right now is that I can see the image in both AMcap and OBS, but in VirtualDub it's all lines. I tried first with RCA, then with S-Video, and it's the same in both. I also tried first with the Sharp and then with the JVC.

I'd appreciate any help getting the image to display correctly in VirtualDub, and any tips on configuring the program itself.

Thanks!

PD: For now, I'm not thinking on use Panasonic ES10/EH55, first i want to work only with JVC+Pinnacle

To fix that problem, set VirtualDub to "Preview (system)" rather than "Overlay".

It's true that the preview mode let see the image, but it seems is playing in slow motion. This mode is 'correct' to digitalizar? I don't know how, but I remember to see that image correctly in Overlay mode in tha past.

Hi everyone!

After a few days of testing, I've been trying out and comparing scans with SHARP+EasyCAP (Set 1) and JVC+Pinnacle (Set 2), both in VirtualDub and AMCap, as I've noticed some strange behavior that I'd like to understand and fix.

I'll list my questions point by point so you can respond to each one individually.

I'll start with the simplest:

1- In Crossbar Thing, I see that every time I restart my PC, Pinnacle defaults to Composite output, and I have to change it back to S-Video every time. Is this normal, or can I change the default output to whatever I want?

2- I've noticed that with some tapes, in Set 2, the Overlay mode displays lines, but it looks fine in Preview mode. The same tape looks fine with AMCap or OBS. Is there an explanation for this? And why do other tapes look fine in both Overlay and Preview modes?

3- I've encountered some 'strange' effects, such as micro-stuttering, where the image freezes for 1 second, plays for 1 second...and so on, and another effect that's a black line running from bottom to top of the screen, as if the image were constantly scrolling upwards.
I mention all these effects because depending on the capture card, software, and VHS player I use, they may or may not appear correctly. If they failed in all cases, I would think the tape was defective...but I think perhaps I haven't quite grasped the configuration of all these components or the digitization software.

In some cases, Pinnacle fails with the JVC card and VirtualDub, which is, let's say, the top-of-the-line setup that should generally deliver the best performance. I've seen tapes where it doesn't produce a good image, exhibiting the side effects I mentioned, and then, with that same tape, using a Sharp (without TBC/NR) and a $10 capture card, the image is reasonably stable, without any strange effects.

If you could provide a summary or a short configuration guide/tips for VirtualDub, I would also appreciate it.

Regards

Also: in capture mode

1. Crossbar Thing behaves differently per system. I have some where it never changes, others where it changes at reboot. Not really a bother, just change it before capture.

2. "lines", as in interlace lines? If so, that is normal, expected, and desired. OBS obliterates it, not good. Not sure about AMcap behavior here.

3. Are you attempting to do other stuff on the system? Or are you letting it alone to capture?

Hi LS!

Finally, after several days of testing, it seems I'm getting the hang of the setup, and I'm starting to master the characteristics of each component for each situation.

1- I've solved the CrossBar Thing issue.

2- It's not interlacing lines; it's a thick black bar running from top to bottom. I don't think that's the problem because a bar that prevents you from seeing the video correctly isn't what it seems. This only happened with one tape out of several I've tested, and I solved it by using the Panasonic ES10 as a bypass and disabling the JVC's internal TBC. It seems that in some specific cases, the JVC's TBC doesn't handle this type of defect well.

I've noticed that the ES10 has a side effect with the audio, and it sounds somewhat 'bottled.' Is this normal? Would it be correct to bypass only the video and send the audio directly from the JVC to the Pinnacle without going through the ES10?

3- I don't usually use anything else when I capture...but I seem to have solved those problems too.

Would you be so kind as to give me some pointers on scripting, or the use of filters for post-processing? Noise reduction...etc., using Avisynth...or whatever is used in these cases? Do you have any scripts to share?

Thanks!
