I found a Tevion-branded usb capture stick at a thrift store a year ago and bought it on a lark since it was only $5. But I'm seeing that it might be a rebranded ATI 600 USB? Did they release more than one with a variety of chipsets inside but the same chassis? Does anybody have the Windows hardware ID for the legit one so I can check under Device Manager, or do I need to crack it open and look at the actual chips?

Tevion rebadged dozens of cards, and most are junk based op generic cheap chips, comparable to Easycaps and "grabbers". Only a very specific version is the "clone". Tevion also does not have any model numbers. Probably 90% of Tevions are not what you want.
The hardware ID in Windows does not tell you anything, as it only shows the eMPIA bridge chip. To see the actual card hardware, you need to crack it open.
Attach a photo of your card here. What does it look like?

Finally cracked it open, I was worried about breaking it, but the shell used clips and wasn't plastic welded.

That is a confirmed "clone".

Really? That was a lucky find for $5, then (maybe less - the Habitat store has lots of discount days). I captured a few test clips back when I bought it, so I know it works. I'll have to do some more captures once I have some free time in a few days.

Just thought I'd post a follow-up. The Japanese LDs I've captured (using the VIDBOX drivers under Win10) have been excellent. Definitely a step up. I'll have time to play around with VHS captures this weekend. The one odd thing I've noticed is that every capture starts with 2 frames being inserted. The source can already be running when I start the capture or vice versa, but 2 frames always get inserted.
Oh, and the price tag on it was $3, not $5.

Same deal with an IO-Data GV-USB2 and AIW USB I've tried, they start with 3 to 4 inserted frames.
Makes me need to delay the audio equal to how many frames were inserted (ie 3 frames equals to a 99 millisecond audio delay)

Yep, I added an offset in StaxRip and it came out fine.

The delay was unique to the laptop I was using. I tried it in a different machine, and no delay.

Here's a screengrab of a VHS capture I made of the 1977 Making of Star Wars TV special and the same frame taken from the Blu-ray release. The captures do need to have their levels adjusted, but I've just been capturing at the Tevion's default settings in Lagarith at 29.97 and adding a level adjustment when I make an mp4. I've been genuinely surprised at the quality.
Tape played on a Go.Video SDV-650 (JVC HR-S9800U clone), TBC on, R3 off. Captured in VirtualDub2, Windows 10, Lagarith lossless, Vidbox NW03 drivers.
[sigh] Reuploaded screengrabs because I had a typo in the file names...
