But I know it was there before, and is on my system, Also tried a capture and seemed to work just fine!, And no (!) warnings in XP Device manager. I do have the ATI 8.8 install CD,with drivers and all. Is there a simple procedure to restore capture driver,or is this a known issue with MMC 8.8? And should I even worry about it??

This often happens if you have other programs open (anything using overlay) while ATI software tries to launch.
For example, you cannot open ATI MMC and VLC at the same time.

Reboot and try again. Make this the first thing you do. Does it still happen?
