not really.
I will say this though, I have a pioneer DVD recorder that I use to play DVD's as well, and I have recorded shows onto my cmputer in VCD quality and when I play them through this recorder, you are hard pressed to see a difference between a VCD quality recorded program and a tv program recorded in 720x480 high quality. (AIW X800XT) This is not the case on my Phillips or Toshiba DVD players, you can definately tell on those players that it is recorded in lower quality. So there is a difference in the playback qualities of certain players/recorders

Hmm, that still doesn't answer which way would be better, 1) convert them to DVD via my computer or use a DVD player & a recorder.

Do NOT copy these like you would a VCR tape. Do it on the computer.

Why do you say that LS? What program would you suggest I use LS to convert them to DVD to get the best quality?

Software can make it more clear and less macro blocks, where on tv it'll just record whut is exactly on screen and not convert bits.

Well, the VCDs I'm wanting to convert don't have any macro blocks or pixs. Just a little fuzzy sometimes. Again, what conversion software would you recommmend?

Well, you really can't improve them as far as quality goes. Once they have been "downgraded" for lack of a better term, they can't be brought back, unless of course you have some studio grade quality hardware, which was my point about the payback quality of various DVD players/recorders some will make them look better.

Thanks LS, this really worked well! I was just watching the eps of Men In Black that I converted, and I must admit they actually came out better then the original eps on the VCDs I had.

There are tricks to visually clean up a VCD, remove blocks, hide deinterlace jaggy noise, etc.

They really turned out nice even using Nero 7 to convert them and put a menu on them. I really was a simple process.
