Hi all,

I have two PAL tapes that recorded the same event but on different cameras back in '95.

Using Virtualdub + FFMPEG Huffyuv with YUV2 4:2:2 color space to get lossless capture of both tapes.

One of the tapes (sample_r1.avi) appears extremely washed out in comparison to the other (sample_n1.avi).
Notice the man in yellow in sample_n1, he is in the background of sample_r1 but his suit appears severely discolored.
Both are attached and in their raw form as recorded from the VHS tape.

I've been poking around with Hybrid's color filters and Virtualdub's ColorMill to try and improve upon this "washed-out-ness" but not had much success.

Any restoration wizards able to lend a hand? Or is this simply down to the clear differences in recording hardware?
Cheers!

It's probably down to the different quality cameras used. Maybe they were also set for different colour balances. The difference will be highlighted when cutting back and forth between the two angles. We can always tone down the color on the stronger recording but boosting the color on the weaker recording to match the stronger recording may only magnify color noise and artifacts. We cant bring back information which was never captured to the tape. You may have to strike a compromise between the two shots.

You can give GamMatch a try:

It worked on my side, but the difference between the 2 videos was small:
