Is this VCR good or damaged?

Hello everyone, it’s me again, lordsmurf.

I took all the time I needed to get the required devices for capturing my VHS tapes:

-Panasonic NV-HS820 VCR (I had to replace the video and audio heads)
-Panasonic ES10
-Pinnacle 510USB
-PC with Windows 7 x64

This is my setup:

-Video: VCR --svideo--> ES10 --svideo--> Pinnacle --> PC
-Audio: VCR --composite--> ES10 --svideo--> Pinnacle --> PC

Hybrid with VapoursynthR70

I had to completely disassemble and replace several components to get the VCR working , and at this point I’m not sure if the capture quality is good or not, so I’m relying on your wisdom.

Hm, can see a lot of jittering... maybe try enabling the Video Stabilizer function in your VCR (if it has one) to see if that would fix it.

Also, viewing these frame by frame I can notice duplicates, I think the footage is supposed to be de-telecined, not deinterlaced...

Hard to say, but could be when replacing the heads that something isn't quite aligned correctly, particularly eccentricity (which is how centered the upper drum is around the shaft). Unlikely the actual drum axle is bent, but that could do it too. Best bet would be to try a random different VCR that hasn't been modified and see if that doesn't have the problem if possible. Vertical jitter can often be corrected by a frame TBC, but that would probably add quite a bit to the budget and isn't guaranteed to fix the visible issue.

Actually, the head doesn’t seem to be perfectly eccentric when it rotates; it makes almost imperceptible vibrations. Could this be the cause? Should I fix it by changing the bearings? It seems unlikely that the shaft is bent.

Could an incorrect positioning of the audio/tracking head play a role?

What exactly do you mean by it should be de-telecined?

If that can help you: I had a vcr with and unbalanced shaft / lower drum partially cracked. Not your conventional drum. i did put small rubber pads (~1-2mm) under the 3 screws that maintain le drum assembly. That rectified the problem (no more vibrations at all, it was rattling like you wouldn't believe) but i had to modify the height of the guides and A/C head for that. And the recordings only work for this vcr (slightly mistrack on other decks)

That jitter is unacceptable, the output is not watchable.

Possible reasons
- bad VCR (view output to TV, not capture card)
- bad capture software settings
- bad ES10 (least likely but possible, easy to eliminate as possible reason/issue)
