title says it all, I can get the vcr for around 70 shipped to my house. I think it would be a good "first model" for someone with limited vcr experience as it isn't $200-800 and it would be a step up from the model I have now. But in my readings I've found that most vcrs need a remote as it holds functions that aren't on the actual vcr unit itself. So does this need a remote?

ive had a few of these, they are much better than the average consumer VCR.
but i still would not use one to do tape transfers as they lack a TBC
you wont need a remote
these unit have an hour meter - ask the seller how many hours are on it.
if it is alot i wouldn't bother with it.

thanks for the info volksjager, hm after looking at standalone TBC I think I'll go with a vcr that has a built in TBC as 400 is way out of my price range lol.

you need both - they serve different functions
you can get a decent TBC JVC and a standalone TBC for under $200 each.

if you want the best quality out of you tapes you need both as well as either a good capture card or a LSI chipset DVD recorder.
there is an HR-S7900U on ebay right now

alright looks around my price range, what about a TBC? does it matter if I get one that is older? I've been searching around ebay and they have a ton of them.

try looking for an AVT-8710 or a Datavideo TBC-1000

i use a KeyWest BVTBC-10 - which can sometimes be found cheap.
there is also a BVTBC-8 which is good
avoid the original BVTBC (no hyphen and number)

also very good one that is hard to find is a For-A FA-125

dont use those old big clunky broadcast TBC's.
